Holiday Yarns and Black Friday Plans.

Holiday Yarns

As you might have seen, there are three limited edition, self striping colorways this season. I’ll only be able to dye them up a couple more times, but if what you want is out of stock, contact me and I should be able to take care of you. To check is any is available, holiday yarns will be kept in the first row of the first page of the shop all holiday season.

The first colorway is Elf. With equal-sized red and green stripes, this colorway looks great on both the Glitz (438 yds) and Strong (400 yds_ Sock bases. If you would like this on the Merino (400 yds) or Luxe (435 yds) Sock bases, let me know and I’ll do a custom order. I will only be dyeing this colorway in Glitz Sock and Strong Sock for the shop.

The next colorway was born from my favorite Christmas decorations, which are always silver and gold. These equal-sized stripes of gold and silver also happen to be a great New Year’s colorway, or if you are just fond of bright, shiny things. The colorway name “Party Dress” comes from all of the bright, shiny, metallic party dresses that are in the stores for the holiday season. This colorway only works on the Glitz Sock base.

This last colorway was a suggestion from a customer, and I am in love with the result. “Winter Wonderland” is equal-sized stripes of silver and light blue, and is a lovely winter colorway regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas. It was even suggested that these colors could be a possible Hanukkah colorway?

This colorway is only available in Glitz Sock as well.

Black Friday

Hey guys, I’ve already had a few people ask me about Black Friday plans, so I thought I’d go ahead and let you guys know what’s up.

I will be having a one day only sale (Friday, November 23) on all of the discontinued organic merino yarn. I need to make room for all of the new stuff, and figured this would be a good time to give you all a little deal for the holidays. This will include all organic self-striping and the already discounted colorways. This will not include any of the new bases (Gynx Sock, Gynx DK, and Gynx Aran only), which means that holiday yarns will not be included.

I will announce the specific amount of the discount on Friday in this thread and all of my social media sites. This will be the last sale I have this year, so now is the time to stock up!

Introducing: Stripes!

Today's the day! Some of you have seemed really anxious for me to release my self-striping yarns, and you don't have to wait much longer (unless of course you're reading this after 1 pm Central, then you don't have to wait at all). Since this is the first batch of self-striping yarns in the shop, I thought I'd give you all a little preview post so you know what to expect this afternoon.

The specs on these are the same as Gynx Sock: 100 gram skeins, 437 yards, 100% organic merino.

Top row left to right: Dallas, Beach Vacation, Tron
Bottom row left to right: Neon & Neutral, Epyon, Naruto

I tried to get a little bit of everything for this update: some darker colors, some very bright colors, some neutrals. I can't say that self-striping will be a regular thing you'll see in the shop, but I still have plenty of colorway ideas. If you want one of the above colorways and it's gone before you get to it, contact me at gynxyarns@gmail.com and I'll happily dye one up for you.

In regards to yesterday's post, you might be interested to know that I decided to go with Ino (the purple). A lot of my fall/winter clothes are neutrals, and I wanted to shake it up a bit. Wolf and Catbus will find their way onto my needles for other things, I'm sure.

June 5 WIPs and Gynx Yarns News.

I really only have two things I'm working diligently on. The first is my Hermoine's Everyday Socks in my Another Crafty Girl yarn (Companion Cube colorway). I cast on for the second one today in hopes that I'll avoid Second Sock Syndrome.

The other is my Trillian scarf/shawl, using my Gynx Sock in Totoro #2. I'm loving how this colorway is working up in this pattern.

Now, on to the Gynx Yarns news. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook or get my emails, you've already heard that I am moving to weekly updates in my shop, instead of listing a little each day throughout the week. This way, you can check in once a week and not miss anything. Updates will be on Tuesdays at 4:00 pm Central time. The first one is today! It's a smaller update, but here's a sneak peek a few hours early ;)

The update will go live at the Gynx Yarns Etsy shop.

Etsy Love: Rachel Elise

It's been a while since I've talked about other Etsy shops, but as I've acquired a couple of things lately, I figured now would be a good time to talk about one of my absolute favorite shops: Rachel Elise.

Source: Etsy

Rachel is actually one of my good friends. The first time I met Rachel, she was sewing bags. A mutual friend brought me over to her dorm room one night back in 2008, and the entire time I was there, she was socializing while sewing bags.

Since then, her business has grown to a full-time endeavor, and she is very good at what she does. She has a knack for combining different fabrics into interesting and unique bags. As of this past Thursday, there are five Rachel Elise bags in my home (one is Jose's laptop bag).

This is my most recent bag that I bought from Rachel this past week and I am in love with it. This is her Satchel, which is my favorite.

All of the Rachel Elise bags I've bought have been really sturdy and great quality, which is why I haven't bought a purse from anywhere else since I got my first Rachel Elise bag.

Some Quick Gynx Yarns Updates.

For my Texas friends, DFW Fiber Fest is this weekend! I will have my entire stock with me, so come by and say hello!

For everyone else, my shop will be on vacation all weekend while I'm at the show, so any orders will need to be placed by today to ensure you get what you want.

Today is the last day that my recycled yarns will be available on Etsy. They will also make an appearance at Fiber Fest, but that will be the last time they will be available for purchase. All remaining recycled yarns are available here at 40% off their original price. They will be coming down from the shop this evening.

I hope you all have an excellent weekend! I know I have a crazy one ahead of me!

FO: Malabrigo Cowl & Etsy Find.

Here's the cowl I was using the Malabrigo yarn for. It's a pretty simple pattern: eyelets on top, a variation of seed stitch on the rest. It's knit flat, starting with a provisional cast on, and kitchener stitched at the end. I just knitted until I was almost out of yarn. It ended up being long enough that I can twist it and wrap it around my neck again.

In other news...

My friend from college Amanda (who is half of the Little Fun Co. shop on Etsy) just listed this adorable kitty coloring book in her shop. I've known Amanda since my Intro to Fibers class, and I've always admired her style of doodling, so I was so excited to see this in her shop!

It's not pictured on the item listing, but on Facebook she posted a picture of the dedication page, which is dedicated to "the cool cats," including my Othello and Augustus! I guess I have to order this for them then ;)

Gynx Yarns' First Employee.

I often describe my business as a one-woman operation, but I think it's time I finally introduced the one employee I have here at Gynx Yarns.

I never really wanted an employee. Right now, at least while Gynx Yarns is still only about a year old, I would really prefer to be in charge of everything myself. My employee kind of forced himself upon me. I turned him away several times, but he was very persistent about wanting to be a part of the company. He has a big passion for yarn, and I can tell he really loves what he does.

So, I gave him the title of Quality Control Director. Since he's been here, he has watched every yard of Gynx Yarn as it is reskeined and been on site for every yarn photoshoot. His dedication is impressive, although he's never actually given me any input. That must mean I'm doing a good job.

 Working hard.

You've actually seen the Quality Control Director on my blog before. His name is Augustus, and even though he's young (less than 2 years old) he has a better work ethic than some people 15 times his age. He's always on time, he works late, he's always dressed up (in a tux, no less), and he actually lives here with me so he can help me if I'm working during odd hours.

Checking up on the photo shoot.

The only problem is his freeloader brother who lives with him. He doesn't do anything here, and actually tries to steal the yarn sometimes.

This is not posed. He stole this skein this morning.

As I'm sure you know, today is the first official day of autumn. In honor of that, all of my recycled yarns in the Etsy shop have been marked down 20%. These lowered prices will be available through September 30th, so grab what you want now!

Handmade Profile: Zelas

I haven't updated in several days. I've been working on a lot of projects, but I haven't made any interesting progress that I wanted to share just yet. I should have a bit to share soon though, because I am very close to being done with the socks and my dresser just needs to be sealed and have new hardware put on.

In the meantime, I thought I'd feature one of my more recent Etsy shop finds, Zela's.

Click on any of the images to go to that item listing on Etsy.

Zela's is mainly a button shop. I don't know why, but I really like buttons. I don't like carrying things with buttons all over them or wearing buttons, but for some reason I like them anyway. According to the listings, each button is hand-stamped and the images are original drawings. I love the style of the drawings.

Most of the characters are from animes (such as Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist and Bleach) or video games (like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts). Now, I don't consider myself an anime fan or a video game nerd, but my fiance recently got me into Naruto and I've been known to casually play Final Fantasy from time to time (the only one I've ever played all the way through was Final Fantasy X).

This is the one I got for me!

So, about a month and a half ago when I stumbled across this shop, I knew I had to pick up a button for my fiance and for me.

This is the one I got for Jose.

There are a lot more that I really like, but like I said, I don't have a use for a lot of buttons. Luckily, for an additional $.50 (on top of the reasonable $2.00 for a 1.25" button) you can request that any design be made into a magnet instead of a pinback button. I think Jose and my future refrigerator might have a few on them eventually.
