FO: Honey Cowl
If you watch my podcast, you've already seen this finished, but I finally took some photos yesterday very quickly before leaving to see my mom, so she could give this to my sister.
My sister wanted me to knit her something out of my yarn, so I dyed up some of my Gynx DK (before I knew it was being discontinued) in the Yuna colorway. I knit the larger size of the Honey Cowl using 2 skeins so that it can either be wrapped twice and be extra cozy(shown above) or worn draped over the neck.
Specs:
Pattern: Honey Cowl by madelinetosh (free!)
Yarn: Gynx DK (discontinued) in "Yuna"
Needles: Size US 8

Ask A Dyer
Debcquilts – “I want to play with dye in squirt bottles to apply color to my
yarn. So, I’ve got the yarn spread out on plastic wrap and apply color. If I’m
using acid dyes, what are my options for heat setting this? If I follow
strictly the edict to not use food stuffs and dye stuffs together, does that
include the microwave? Or can I put this skein in a hot bath, given I’ve
introduced acid somewhere? I’m just asking about the heat source here. And, of
course, colorfastness in the process. If I’ve got a skein of orange on one side
and blue on the other with white in between, I don’t want mud if I put it in
its heat bath, but I do need to set the color?Thx!”

FO: V-Yoke Cardigan
I can't believe I forgot to post this cardigan! I finished the knitting a week ago, but I finally took some pictures on Friday, and then immediately gave the cardigan to my mom. It fits and she seemed to like it, so it was a success!
Bare with me... I took a lot of photos!

Ask A Dyer
Debcquilts - What steps need to be taken to ensure
colorfastness? I’ve had some very bad experiences with hand dyed yarns I’ve
bought that bled and ruined my projects. I can always overdye these, so when I
say ruin it’s with an eye towards doing something to fix it. But it is ruined
when I intend it to be a certain colorway and it ends up needing to be quite
another. When I dye my own, I’d like to ensure this doesn’t happen, or when I use other’s hand dyed, is there something I can do to either set the dye further (vinegar?) or release the dye molecules (synthropol)? BEFORE I use it or spend hours or months knitting something?
TheDrollEclectic - Do you have any thoughts about whether I should overdye the yarn before knitting or overdye the finished garment? I have a sweater-quantity of Patons Classic Merino in Bottle Green (#00220). I thought giving it a dip in some black would give it some depth of color and be more appealing.
Overdyeing the yarn could lead to some pooling while knitting if the darker or lighter areas stack up, but dyeing the garment would probably lead to larger areas of pooling. I’m sure it is a matter of deciding which effect I want. It is a scary thought to dye something AFTER knitting it! I still won’t know exactly how the sweater will look even if I dye before knitting, so I guess there is a bit of a gamble either way.
I will test a sample skein first to make sure the yarn will accept the dye.
Knittygirl - Ugh, how do you re-skein yarn after dyeing self striping. I am using a niddy noddy but I have the feeling I will run into trouble!
